This is done in Photoshop layering up a sequence of images and deleting any unwanted overlaps.

I had to open the shutter for 30 seconds to get all the light in on this shot.
This was after the Bemus Bay Pops performed on the floating stage in Chautauqua Lake, NY
So during my year and at half at Peek’n Peak I shot over 20,000 photos at over a hundred events. I had a Canon 30D that they purchased for me to use. I’d say the return on the investment was ten fold! 
As you can see from the gallery link, not only did I take a horde of sales aids that were used in broadcast commercials, countless print and web campaigns, and regional billboards, but I also produced a resort image gallery and web based user forum.
